The facility is kept highly classified, protected from unauthorized entry by alert signs, electronic surveillance and armed guards.[two] The CIA declassified documents related to Area 51 and recognized its existence in 2013.[3]

Area 51'due south intense secrecy has acquired it to become the subject of many conspiracy theories regarding the presence of aliens on the site.[4] These began in the 1950s, when some individuals reported seeing UFOs at the location of the base. Conspiracy theorists believe aliens, UFOs, or data related to them are stored at Area 51.[5]

Matty Roberts was a Bakersfield resident, and a moderator of the Facebook folio Shitposting cause I'yard in shambles.[1] "Shitposting" is the deed of posting content online with intentionally ironic or poor quality.[half dozen] Matty devised the idea of creating the Tempest Area 51 event after watching Area 51 conspiracy theorist Bob Lazar and filmmaker Jeremy Corbell on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast on June xx, 2019.[vii] [8] [9] He created the upshot on Facebook on June 27, 2019.[10] [11] [12]

The consequence was planned to take place in Amargosa Valley from threea.m. to 6a.m. PDT on September twenty, 2019.[10] [13] [xiv] The Facebook event wrote, "If we naruto run, nosotros can move faster than their bullets. Lets see them aliens",[vii] referring to the distinctive running manner of anime character Naruto Uzumaki and several other characters, who run with their artillery stretched behind them, head down and torso tilted forward.[15] [16] Roberts stated the event had but received effectually 40 responses 3 days into the event's listing, earlier information technology suddenly and unexpectedly went viral.[13] [17]

The resulting meme rapidly spread to other social media applications such as TikTok, Reddit, and Instagram.[18] The Facebook page for the event was filled with thousands of satirical posts discussing topics like means of breaking into Area 51.[fourteen] The meme's virality caused Roberts to worry that he would receive a visit from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.[ix] [17] The result received 2million "going" and some other 1.5 one thousand thousand "interested" signatures as of August 22.[nineteen]

Rapper Lil Nas X released a music video for the Young Thug and Mason Ramsey remix of "Old Town Road" almost the planned raid.[20] Copycat events such as plans to storm a genealogical vault of the Church building of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,[21] Loch Ness,[22] Bermuda Triangle[23] and the The holy see'due south athenaeum[24] [25] were likewise created.

The boondocks of Rachel posted a circumspection on its website, advising attendees to be "experienced in camping, hiking and surviving in a harsh desert environs and have a vehicle in good shape".[30] They advised that the town would likely exist unable to provide sufficient food, water or gas to visitors, and expected local law enforcement to be overwhelmed.[30] The website warned that local residents would readily protect their property, predicting that Alienstock would be "Fyre Festival 2.0".[seven] [31]

Event creator Roberts pulled out of Alienstock ten days before the festival, leaving other organizers and booked entertainers to run the consequence.[30] Roberts claimed his terminal-infinitesimal deviation with $seventy,000–$100,000 in sponsorship coin and donations was "due to poor planning", and he instead joined an alien-themed political party already planned in Las Vegas, although the Little A'Le'Inn possessor Connie West continued with the proper name Alienstock in Rachel, Nevada.[30] Roberts's lawyers sent her a end and desist regarding employ of the name, but West was in possession of all of the Alienstock permits and ignored the legal threats.[44]

After the raid, Keith Wright, a promoter for the Area 51 Basecamp event, stated the event was a failure.[45] Connie West, who organized Alienstock, declared her event a success.[46] The event's aftermath saw several pending lawsuits surrounding the festival and Roberts's phone call to breach the regime facility.[47] Although much less than the estimated 30,000 attendees expected before Roberts'south deviation—and a press campaign claiming Alienstock was canceled—the upshot was thought to take brought the largest influx of people e'er to visit Lincoln County at the same fourth dimension.[37]
